Homecomings
Homecomings is the sequel to Time of Hope and continues the direct experience of Lewis Eliot, the central figure and narrator in C. P. Snow's large sequence of novels known as Strangers and Brothers. A complete story on its own, the novel follows Eliot's life during his thirties and early forties, predominantly during the war. After the personal tragedy of his first wife's death, he is closely involved at the Ministry in the wartime conduct of industry. It is only afterwards that, with the help of his second wife, he learns to commit himself emotion- ally in a true relationship. And here, as along the corridors of power, C. P. Snow's insight into character is masterly. 'As good as anything Mr Snow has written. The power of this solid, slow-moving, reflective narrative over the reader is quiteremarkable. Again the reminder is of Trollope, and at times Mr Snow seems to be the exponent of a new literary movement, which can only be called neovictorianism'- The Times
